Hi everyone - I have a chance to obtain a Gen III LS 5.3 engine that was recently rebuilt. It would be great to replace my tired 307. Would this engine work with my recently rebuilt 700R4? The Gen III is a cast iron block and has a cable throttle body. Tried to find info on line but nothing concerning this. My thought was the fact that it has a cable throttle body, it was most likely paired with a 700R4 and not a newer electronic tranny.

Next question is - if I'm going to all this trouble would it be wiser to go with a gen IV or newer with matching tranny even though it would cost a lot more in the end?

My goal is to simply have a more drivable - better mpg truck.

From reading some answers on other forums, yes you can run the 700R4. Apparently one mount hole will not be used and you will need an adapter for the crank for the torque converter. And Lokar makes a bracket for the TV cable. Most of these answers were for Gen 1 LS motors, but should carry over.

You can do it, it's an adapter for the crank length and one bolt missing as already posted. Use a manual bin in the PCM.

If you can find a 4L65e from behind a LS motor you also get the more accurate and adjustable shifting when tuning the motor.

Thanks for the replies. It would be the TV cable to the 700r4 I was most concerned about. If I move forward I will a matched LS and electronic tranny.
