Later model axle swaps have been done on 49-54 Chevy's without the need for changing leaf springs. You can add traction bars to eliminate leaf spring bending on acceleration. However you would need to include a floater kit to retain a stock ride.
The other option is to go with a 4 link suspension and eliminate the leaf springs all together.
