I read accounts all the time about car restoration products not meeting expectations. I don't often read about products and manufacturers that exceed our expectations, so I thought it might be time for something different...a commentary on good service, for a change.

The motor on the passenger side Nu-Relics regulator was failing in my 1950 Chevrolet Business Coupe. It would travel up about half way and start growling and grinding. If I grabbed the window and lifted, the window would roll up the rest of the way.

I called Nu-Relics which, by the way, guarantees their product, and spoke with Dusty Wiles. I described my symptoms and went on to further explain that the motor worked fine under a no load scenario. Dusty said that he had, on rare occasions, encountered this situation before and promptly offered to send me a new motor.

Two days later, the motor arrives (just before Christmas) and I install the new motor. I test the installed assembly and ...NOTHING! I test the switch, 12.6 volts. I check motor out of the car, and it functions fine. I reinstall the regulator assembly and...NOTHING! I start loosening bolts and testing the assembly as I go along and bingo, it works fine with the upper bolts loose and about 1/8" away from the inner door skin.

It was then that I realized that the motor had failed because the regulator assembly was in such a bind that it eventually caused some gear stripping. Bottom line, the installer (yours truly) failed to fully inspect the mechanism for binding and clearance after final assembly. The motor wasn't defective, but the victim of what I would call a poor installation. I shimmed the upper two bolts using 3 ea 1/4" SS washers glued together with super glue, verified travel and alignment and voila...works perfectly. Better than ever in fact.

I called Dusty at Nu-Relics and confessed my sins. I offered to pay for the motor and shipping, since it was my installation that caused the failure, but he would have none of it!

I don't know if Dusty Wiles owns Nu-Relics or just works there, and I really don't care. All I can say is he is a stand up guy and Nu-Relics is a stand up outfit.

Two thumbs up for Nu-Relics, a product that works and a company that goes the extra mile for their clientele.
