I am wanting to buy a new engine, to keep in reserve, for when I need it. It appears, that GM #12691671 is the current long block for my 1989 1500 chevrolet. The previuos number was #12703983.

First I'm trying to determine if this is the right engine. Second, is, where would you guys buy it from?
The lowest price Ii'm seeing is from a Chevrolet dealership in Wisconsin, anyone ever ordered here, or would you be compfortable

https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/parts/12691671....

this other place has a calculator, that says whether or not, it's the right engine for your vehicle or not, and it's saying that #12691671, is not the right engine. The description says its for a '1991-1995, instead of 1987 -1995

https://www.gmpartsgiant.com/parts/gm-engine-asm-g ...

This ebay ad, that is old/outdated, says its 1987-1995

https://www.ebay.com/itm/302083419849?ssPa geName=S...

So, I don't know the difference between engine in 1987 - 1990, and 1991-1995. I also unsure who to buy from. I will need it shipped.
I would appreciate any advice, or, experiences you had with any of these listed businesses, or, any other engine sellers you may have bought from.
thanks

Here’s a very good long block that I bought to replace the one I blew up after not replacing the oil when I replaced the head gaskets

350L131T from Carolina Machine Engines.

Why thank you cowboy trucker. I think what I got out of your post the most is, the quote from Edmond Burke, at the bottom. How true that is, as we see it today.

Anyone else commenting please. What I'm really stumped about is what changed b/t '90 and /91 ?

It's been a long time since I bought my Genuine GM crate engine, but when I did I ordered it through the parts department of my local Chevy dealer. It was a short trip to the local dealer to pick it up when it came in. I don't remember if they charged shipping; they get enough truck freight in from the GM warehouse that I would think they won't charge shipping. Give any GM dealer a try with the part number.

Thank you 55chev66, usually I'd just go to my local chevrolet dealer, like you said. However it was about a difference of $600 partly by price + tax.

I went ahead and bought one out of state, from a GM dealer advertising on the web. It should show up next week. Hopefully it arrives undamaged, and problem free.

I'm not going to install it in anything yet. I will either put it in my '89 if its motor goes bad, or I will hold it as a backup, and am currently looking to buy a half ton (88-94), so if I find a deal on one w/ bad engine, I might be ready. I hated to fork out the $ like that, but lately, I'm trying to think and buy ahead on some things.

thank you for reply

I know you said you already bought one, but the folks at Scoggin-Dickey have always had the best prices for me.

lol, thats who I bought it from. Also, got better vibes from them than anyone else after talking to them. There was a place about $350 cheaper, but i wouldnt have saved anything due to sales tax, and I was less compfortable w/ them over the phone.

I picked it up today, fed ex carried it, the box looked great, no damage. Now I got to figure a way to get it off the back of my pickup, and into an overseas container. I guess I could pick it out of the crate w/ cherrypicker and chain to the 3/8 intake mant bolts, but I'd like to keep it stored in crate. So, I'm thinking of sliding its pallet/crate down two pieces of 10 foot long channel iron, but its more risky that way. thanks for the replies everyone

When mine arrived I put two chains around the entire crate and lifted it out with an engine hoist. One chain going front to back and one going side to side. Little bit of a pain getting the chains under the crate, but not too bad.

that sounds like a good idea. I'll have to look at the bottom of pallet tommorrow, and think about that one. I have plenty of chains, thanks
