Is it the number on the plate that is on the door post or number on engine.

Most states, back in the day, used the engine block number as the VIN on the title. I wasn't until 1951 that the body serial number on the "A" pillar was riveted on. Prior to that they were simply screwed into place making them very easy to switch. Therefore, as stated, most states used something that was a little more difficult to switch out which turned out being the engine. If it is a 1950 title the VIN number would begin with a "HA" which is how the passenger car blocks were stamped and if the block number was used.

On my Michigan registered '50 Deluxe the door tag number is used.

Would you be leery in buying a 50 car that does not have a door post tag. The title is OK as it has the engine serial number on it. I've read a lot of early 50 chevys used the engine number on title.

I would not worry about it if the title is ok now. My 50 was registered with the engine #. I'm in CA. where they always get there panties in a wad when registering an old car.

I got a nice letter from the MO DMV, saying the local tag office had put my VIN down as the tag number, and my tag number as the VIN number. Have not heard anything since.

Now back in Ohio, but when living in NC and now Ohio, the body serial number was used on the title.

Never could imagine why the engine number would have been used on a title, but it was ……

Virginia here, pillar tag was used as "Vin". My title was from Nevada when I transferred it. The Nevada title also used the pillar tag number.

My NC title for the 50 coupe is for the door pillar tag number. It was just issued 2 months ago. Struck me as being strange using the engine number (I know some states did) as the engines were changed over time but the body IDs should stay the same.
