Seems I have much "trash" in my 1951 gas tank. Flushed the line and changed the filter. I'm on the road but knowing I'll have future problems. After 70 years a new gas tank is most likely in order. I'm sure someone else has had this problem. What'ja do. Flush and seal? New steel/stainless steel tank? From where? I put a plastic/fiberglass tank in a car once. I'll never do that again.

For my ‘54, my old tank had rusted too far for comfort. I bought a new steel tank.

On other old cars that didn’t have rust holes, I have successfully used the POR-15 fuel tank sealer. You have to clean it somewhat and get rid of the loose rust (shaking a chain around inside helps). Seems like I had to rinse with muriatic acid after the chain. The instructions with the kit are pretty good.

When inside completed, I coated the outside with POR15 paint. Not sure about now, but the stuff at the time was really tough and hard to chip.

I had it out recently for other work and looked inside, and it was as good as the day I coated it.

Your issue is typical.
Most people like me think by pulling the tank, cleaning it, replacing it, new filter and so on will eventually cure the issue.
So you make a cruise and all is well, but on the way home you hope to make it home.
So you pull the tank again thinking this will fix it, reinstall the tank, and once again all seems ok.
Then once again your pulling the tank again, what else could be in there?
By this time your getting good at pulling the tank.
As stated, remove and replace one more time with a new tank new fuel lines.
getting caught on the bad side of town will without a doubt help you decide on ordering the new tank.
I too looked at por 15 for the tank, but decided not to due to the amount of pin holes in the bottom of these tanks.
I did use por 15 in the filler neck, no reproduction filler necks were made at that time.
This piece was glass beaded on the inside until it was nearly 100% then internally coated with por15 about 30 years ago.
Here is a pic of the inside of the filler neck coated with por15.
Hard to believe it still looks that nice, no flakes.
Fuel system has become a non issue.

Ditto on a new tank. I got mine from NCA many years ago.

1953 210 Convertible, 261 with dual Carter YF 966S carbs, P.S., Remote Bendix P.B. Booster... shade-tree restoration about done.

I went the new tank route as well but I also replaced the Fuel line. It solved all my strange Carburetor problems even with a fuel filter in my 53 210.

Any recommendations on vendors for a replacement tank? Would just like to remove and replace.

Anything I should look out for? Fuel line fittings? Size? Filler and relief tubes sizes / locations? Anything that bit you when doing yours?

Fwiw I’ll be going with a polyester one like this

Chevs of the 40s may have stainless. Nevertheless, if you’re going through the trouble, perhaps makes sense to go beyond mild steel
