Can anyone tell me what this engine is, and what it originally came in?

It has the captains bars above the starter, and also has an 848 head.

I remember Gene saying some '53 235 engines had the captain's bars. This is the first one I've seen first hand. A buddy of mine bought the car--it's a '53 210, 2-door sedan in exceptional shape. Hardly any rust and it runs and drives. PG car. He bought it today and asked me to come look at it. I got all excited when I saw the captain's bars above the starter.

Here's another one. On the stamp pad: F 1229 LB
I believe it's a 1959 block, but I can't find the Old Manual page.

Nope. It's a 6-banger. I think it's a 261.
I'll post some photos.

Here is the stamp. Hard to see--my camera isn't the best, but the last two letters are LB.

And casting number:

Is there a casting date on the block?

It would seen that the cast number is a 261 casting number used from 1958-1962 but I have nothing in print from Chevrolet to verify that.

Okay 1957, but just an I6 then... Truck 3100, 3200, 3600, 3800, 4000
(Looks like maybe it got the HD Clutch "IF" it were a V8, because it would seem that Chevrolet used the "LB" suffix on the V8s as well. That's the way I'm interpreting it anyway).

Or base engine on 1960-61 (possibly 1962 also) C-L-S 60 models also used the LB suffix.

G232. Is that July 23, 1962? Or?

That's probably it. The GM Heritage web page does not list the '62 engine serial numbers as in the vehicle information kits for the prior years.
