I sold my 53 and bought a 51. I don't know why. The 53 sure was nice and I wasn't gonna buy any more cars at my age. The skirts on the 51 don't fit as well as I would like them to. Does anyone know, are the skirts the same for 49 thru 52? Could I have the wrong ones?

I assume '49 and '50 would match and the '51 and '52 would match. Only a guess on my part.

Skirts are grouped as follows:

49-50 and 51 and 52 Station Wagon and Sedan Delivery (slight taper - about an inch - front to rear, there is a left and right skirt)
51-52 symmetrical and interchangeable left to right
53-54 symmetrical, not 100% sure if these are interchangeable but mostly because of attachment points (53-54 owners can chime in)

As an experiment, knowing that it would not fit properly, I put a 49-50 skirt into my 51 Fleetline. It took a little doing but I got it in there. This is the result:

I see you have your car listed as a DeLuxe. Is it actually a DeLuxe? Or maybe a Special that had skirts added later on?

To me, it just looks as though the rear bracket needs to up a hair.

'53 and '54 are the same but there is a left and a right. I believe all models across the board were the same however, I don't have any experience with the wagons.

Okay thanks. And am I right in assuming there is a left and right because of the brackets and how they attach?

I am glad that this post came along. It seems that I have two left side fender skirts. One skirt has the bracket at the rear and the other at the front.

I think that I could swap ends with the brackets on the offending fender skirt to make it right. I should be able to take good measurements and re-drill the holes and brad them in place.

Thanks, Pete

Mine has then locking mechanism at the rear. Is this what is being referred to as brackets? Are mine on backwards?

The mounting bracket with the long slot is at the rear of the fender well. To me it is a lot easier to hook the fender skirt in there and lock it in on the front. But what do I know? I didn't even know I vhad two left side skirts.

1951-1952 Fender skirts are exact "carbon copies" of one another. When installed, the loop latch is to the front on the left side, and to the rear on the right side. There was only one skirt made for the '51 and '52 model year and that one skirt was used on either side. The photo below is of the original skirts from my '51 Fleetline. They are exactly the same in every detail. The image below that is the hardware kit that was used when adding skirts to a Special. Note that all 4 brackets are identical and this is what is evident on my original Fleetline. They are exactly like what I used when I added skirts to my Special Business Coupe.

My'50 skirts are left and right hands and fit pretty snugly.

When I had my 53 the locking mechanism was at the front on both, they fit well, and they were easy to remove/install. But that was a nice car. These are a nightmare. They don't even have the loop handle. I think I'll shop for a set of skirts. Anyone have a pair to sell? Thanks to all for your help. If I was younger I'd get smart, but at my age, I just bump along.

The mounting bracket with the long slot is at the rear of the fender well. To me it is a lot easier to hook the fender skirt. Should the hardware with the long slot be on end that hooks or the one that locks with the lever?

On the 1951 and 1952, the hardware is the same at all four locations. This is the way it is on my original 1951 Fleetline. The photos below are of the brackets on the left side of the car, but they are exactly the same on the right side. Although difficult to see, It is also what is detailed in the Accessory Installation Manual when installing fender skirts on a Special. Given what was included in the kit - see photo above in prior posting, it is how I installed the skirts on my Special coupe and they fit very well.

I have one skirt that was sold to me as a 1950. It is not. It looks a lot like the one RAM posted. I don't want to say it's NOS but it is pretty nice. There are staples holding the weather strip on. Send me a PM if you are interested. Thanks

Wow, Thanks RAM. I never knew that about the levers on the earlier models going opposite directions from side to side- learn something everyday I guess... Your post also points out something else I've always wondered. All my experience comes from the 53/54's and I always see the brackets offered as a set of four. That was always strange to me seeing as only two are required for 53/54, now I know why.

Thanx to all that commented. I found a replacement pair of skirts. They are on their way. One question remains. Ram suggested that my car may not be a Deluxe but a Special that had skirts added. How would I tell if my car is a Deluxe or altered Special?

Following gcrkfrd's post, Style No. would tell the story on the cowl plate. 51-12XX would be a Special while a 51-10XX would be a DeLuxe. You can also determine it from the Serial Number on the "A" pillar. A "J" in the third place indicates a Special, while a "K" in the third place indicates a DeLuxe.

Just a thought after seeing your photo. Are you sure the attaching rod isn't bent and not pushing the skirt up further?
