Hi all,

I need to rebuild my steering column (El Camino 59) and have been online for hours looking for details regarding an exploded view of the steering column. I suppose that living in Europe means that not all US webpages are being shown in my searches although I have found lots of other years.

Is there a chance that any of you have such details and could take a photo of it please? Thank you so very much in advance (apologizes in case this topic already exists).
Andreas

You might have to buy the 1958 Chevy manual and 59-60 supplement. The website old car manuals that had I think the 59/60 supplement does not work anymore.
I rebuilt the steering column in my 60 elcamino its a fiddly job.
If you go to the 1961-1964 chevy section here they have some manuals for 1961 to 1964 although not exactly the same can help

Thank you for your reply and your information. I will try and organise to get such a manual. I have seen one once but due to the repeated copying it wasn't very clear. It's a pity that the website you mentionned isn't working anylonger.

Yes, I am aware about it to be a bit tricky!! Let's hope I am able to do it the right way.

First of all, welcome to ChevyTalk! Great place for all things Chevy (and other things as well).

You didn’t indicate if it is a manual or auto trans.

Neither the ’58 Shop Manual or the ’59-’60 Supplement shows an exploded view of the steering column.

The reprint of the ’58 Shop Manual that I bought is not worth the paper that it is printed on.
Had I have known this I would have tried to find an original one.

A 1959 Assembly Manual will be your best friend when it come to details of your car.

I am not sure that the 1959 and 1960 steering columns are the same but I have attached an exploded view of the 1960 manual and auto column.

The written instructions for the auto trans is poor quality. I typed a new instruction sheet and if yours is an auto and you need the instruction I will try to find it later.

Again, I am not sure that the ’59 and ’60 are the same. Maybe someone that knows for sure will chime in.
Again welcome to CT and I hope that this may help you. Lamar

Hi Lamar,

Thank you so much for your welcome

And thank you too for the two diagrams. Yours of the original will surely help me rebuilding it (it is an automatic by the way, both the 59 and 60 are the same), I had bought it 20 years ago, I have some other Oldtimer cars too, all rebuild in their original condition so this one will be a bit different, at least with the colour Not sure how I am able to add pictures, I will have a look at it later on.

I wouldn't need the descripton though, thank you so much for your offer, it's very appreciated.

I have watched your youtube-video of the restoration of your car too, it really looks great, you did an amazing job!

Andreas,

Welcome to Chevytalk. Lamar posted great diagrams and that is the best source on the web.

Where in Switzerland do live? I went to a Swiss Buick Club meeting years ago, but I don't remember the town. I have a friend near Basel and I send him lots of parts as needed.

Welcome!

Hi Russ

Thank you.

What a coincidence you went to a meeting here in Switzerland. There are several bigger and as well smaller ones throughout Switzerland. I live near Zug, a smaller city in Central Switzerland.

How kind of you to help your friend in Basel , I am sure he is grateful about it. Luckily it is easier now to order from abroad/US comparing to how it was 30 years ago (but the shipping costs are sometimes horrendous).

Hi Andreas,
Welcome to Chevy Talk.

Try https://imgur.com/ to host your photos, easy to use (for most)

I'll be Frank, this hobby isn't getting any easier.
