I have an Auto Meter tach on the dash of my 350 with factory hei van. Some time ago I had ignition problems and disconnected it while I figured them out (another post). Running hod now so I reconnected. Shortly after, the engine shut down and refused to start as if it had a bad module. Zip! I disconnected the tach and it started right up!! What is going on? Tia

Wow! You have a bad gremlin. Electrical shorts are hard to find. Suspect the tach or wiring to tach. Is the tach grounded properly? Is the tach set up for V8 signals? Did it work previously?

I had a similar problem about 15 years ago. Mine turned out to being the tach. It was shorting out the ignition. A new tach fixed my problem.

gchemist, Good points. I did find the ground was not grounded. I think the ground was just for the light? Anyway to test?

64SS409, After you replaced was it good? Are these HEI made for a full time tach? I had no problems for years…

An HEI can run a tach full time. Mine runs a signal to a digital tachometer. I'll have to go back and read your other post. An electrical power surge can ruin sensitive electronics. My digital voltmeter is not working. It's the second I've put in. Running a 165 amp alternator and dual cooling fans may be causing too much of a power surge.
