I have a 63 327 motor that I have a short water pump. I bolted on the correct water pump pulley. I bolted on the correct used intake manifolds (alternator bracket was already attached). I bolted on the curved alternator bracket that I think is correct that is totally flat and lines up perfectly with the back of alternator tab. I bolted on the alternator which I found used (has a double pulley on it which I know the pulley is not correct) but the water pump pulley lines up with the outer alternator Pulley instead of the inner one. Just wondering why it is lining up with the outer pulley instead of inner one?? Because I want to just use a single pulley on alternator.

I had powder coated most of the accessory brackets and put on reproduction exhaust manifolds on my 64. (I have power steering and AC, so I have 3 belts going on) I found there was a slight misalignment for the alternator that caused the belt to come off at least once. The powder coating makes the brackets thicker, the reproduction manifold may not have been perfectly accurate.
I put some washers (about 1/4 inch worth) between the alternator and the manifold and that got things lined up just fine.

From what I remember on my 64 Impala SS w/327, that alternator bracket from the water pump to the top of the alternator wasn't totally flat. It seemed to have a bit of an offset.

As far as the alternator goes, if it has dual pulleys then it is likely incorrect for your vehicle.

Post photos dude! My 62 is an AC car with power steering so that's three belts with the alternator, but I wanted to put a smaller pulley on my AC Delco alternator (not the original, but similar) and had to get the right stand off pulley to fit. I went to an auto electrician and he gave me a box of about 100 pulley to sort through until I found the perfect fit. This photo was more about the cruise control brain, but you can see how the alternator belt fits on the fatter pulley. The top bracket fits pretty much flat with the front of the alternator.

I put on another alternator kicking around with a single pulley and it is about an 3/4 - 7/8 inch off. Thw exact same as the sual pulley one. If either alternator could move forward about 3/4 - 7/8 of an inch it would be great.

Does anybody know if there are different alternator bracket (the one that bolts onto the manifold) I assumed there is only one with the same offset?

If the bottom bracket bolts to the standard exhaust manifold, flip the bottom mount over the other way and see if the offset takes it more forward. Or maybe you have an earlier generator bracket instead of the standard alternator bracket.

I dont have any good pics but the upr bracket on my '65 327 is definitely offset to the front (stock OE rams horn manifolds and brackets)

My 327 has a single pulley ,upper mount arm is straight and bolts to the top water pump bolt.But this is a mr. gasket arm that was purchased 30 yrs ago. I know some bolted to the intake and others bolted to the water pump. I am not that into a perfect resto so it doesn't bother me I sanded it down and sprayed it black .

For 1963 small blocks, the upper alternator adjustment bracket did attach at the drivers side upper water pump mounting bolt. It had a stud on the end of the bolt.
The 64 small blocks had a different bracket as the intake manifold was a different casting, having a boss cast into the manifold allowing the bracket to be attached at that point, next to the oil fill tube.

Yes I tried 2 single short water pump pullies I have and a double aluminum (no number on it) one I have and the groove on all 3 are exactly the same spot.

Is there different length alternators? I thought they were all the same "length"?

I've attached a 'shot' from the 63 Shop Manual Supplement of the 327 v8. Perhaps it may provide some useful info.

Also, the alternator may attach to the 'front', or the 'back' of the bracket (the bolt will go in either direction). That changes where the pulley 'aligns' by about 3/4" (or so, I did not measure).

There were variations of configurations over the years; all of which can be interchanged if done properly with the correct assortment of parts.

I just checked where my alternator is mounted. It is inside the bracket and it lines up correctly.

The non-A/C 'Classic' Chevy's (2 ,'63s) I have owned had a single 'grooved' water pump pulley. It 'lined' up with the 'inner' groove on the crank shaft pulley and the alternator (the 'outer' groove on the crank pulley drove the power steering, if so equipped ). One V belt connects the three. The crank pulley is 'fixed' in space.

A/C cars were configured a little differently (I too lazy to look them up).

Does your alternator align with the inner crank pulley? I can't see the crank pulley. Because I can't see it, makes me conclude it does not.

Another conclusion? You have the wrong water pump pulley.

From your pic, the alternator appears to be right where it should be.

It's been my experience that there is only long and short pumps with your 63 being a short that you are aware. It's also been my experience that all alternators are built to accept a double or single grove pulley. The single grove has a shoulder to space it away from the alternator. My guess is that if you install the correct single grove pulley it will line up.

I had a 63 with a 327 and found out that you need the pulley pictured here for it to align properly, there is nothing wrong with your brackets or mounting. .

Here is a photo of my 63 alternator pulley with original brackets. I had the same problem you have until I found the original pulley that I had taken off of my alternator when I restored it. It was a deep groove that pushed the belt forward to align perfectly with the water pump.
