A while back I bought a used rear end. Old and high mileage.Worn out, loose but perfectly useable until...it breaks.
A mechanic who I was told could fix the looseness set it all to factory new specs so I basically still have a loose rear end.

If I had the specs needed I'd give him another shot I guess.
What are the specs for resetting this condition into something that will restore it? New inch pound settings, clearances, torque setting etc. Or is it even worth it? Where are the guys who used to do this magic no problem?
I'm getting pretty old so a complete rebuild with all new parts seems frivolous.

G'day,
Pages 1 through 17 of Section 4 of the 1957 Chevrolet Passenger Car Shop Manual provides details of the maintenance and overhaul of the rear-end.
As for "old school" mechanics, they're disappearing as we age. These days, mechanics are more about remove and replace than having the ability to repair or overhaul. When you find a good old school mechanic, they're valuable.

Yep!!I Sooooo agree with you!Us Old School Guys are disappearing.I'm one of them.Almost 50 years in the business and still at it!P.S.My Auto Shop Instructor still helps out part time.Old School German Dutch and a Mickleton NJ Farm Boy.We make and FIX things around here!Enough Said???

Differential repairs are not overly complicated.The shop manual can walk you through it or even a good Chilton or Motors book of the day also.From scratch you have Pinion Depth,Pinion Bearing Preload,Carrier Bearing Preload and Backlash.You need to watch for worn spider gears and washers,These will give you excessive clearance mostly.You'll need a few specialty tools.The original bearings were NDH,{Hyatt}I use Timken's here exclusively or at least any old USA stock I can find.So many parts out here anymore that are Chinese Garbage!The people who sell them are just sales people and bank on the fact we don't use our cars on an every day basis,so who cares!We get to do it over,but Junk is Junk IMO.The original parts were good in most cases back in the day,but the oils and lubricants weren't the best.Today,oils,lubricants are very good,so with good quality parts and some modern techniques,you get the best of both worlds.I do a lot repairs here and you should see some the so-called restored cars and builds I get in here.I Can't keep up with it.Over a third aren't even road worthy or safe to drive.It's terrible.I've seen a lot of sealed components that haven't seen the light of day since they were new.Nice paint though...P.S. Old School Mechanics?I'm one of them spending 50 years in business and still at it.

Good on you Joey and DZ.
We had a couple former drag racers and the owner of a couple circle track cars provide us with some direction during our build. Xvette also provided his professional wisdom. The drag racers were also professional mechanics. Glad we had their knowledge available to us. Sadly, one of the racers passed away about 5 years ago. In retrospect, I wish I would have followed the racers around their garages, completely learned what they know and followed them into professional mechanics.

Nice to hear it's not my imagination about finding a good tech!
My guy here is a good tech too although too young and possibly lacks the experience, the know how of setting up used gear.

He did say all the bearing looked good when I picked it up adding that it was set to what the book called for. His concern was that it would break. Why, he didn't say but I know the spider gears acted like they could used another washer...they seemed to be really loose, have lots of play in them.

Why a good Mechanic would get run off this or any other forum is another entirely different subject!
Almost any good Tradesman knows his worth & likes to do things in a way to which he knows work.
This may appear to some to be grumpy, irritable even.
Maybe that's not agreeable or even allowed in this day and age as things aren't like they used to be. Pity in both instances.

If you're getting too much clearance at the spiders,Never add washers.Each gear has a special thrust washer and only one is required per gear.Check for excessive wear on the gears themselves,or watch the case they sit in.It can wear also as well as the the shaft pin itself.I see this on modern units from time to time.Slide the gears onto the pin,check for excessive side clearance around the pin.You'd be surprised.Need parts,Randy's Ring and Pinion.Everett WA 800-347-1188.Differentials is all they do!
