I recently added a HO alternator to 1970 impala.

Once installation was done crank the car up, no noise in Park, running fine. But when I put it in gear there is a whining, grinding like sound coming from the transmission.

It makes the noise the loudest when the brake is pressed, once the car gets rolling the noise gets quieter an pretty much goes away.

I put the car on the lift, same thing, noise in gear with the brake pressed. No noise at all in gear with no brake.

While in Park or Neutral no noise at all even with brake pressed.

Checked fluid level, was a little low, topped it off did same thing.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Any solutions??

Assuming you are running the factory speedo and cable, and not an aftermarket digital pulse generator, I would drop the trans pan and see if there's any metal or debris in there. I would change the filter as long as you're in there. If nothing is amiss, then you'd have to drop the trans and check on the torque converter. Good luck.

Thanks for the advise.

I actually drained the transmission pan and changed the filter.

There were some metal shavings in the fluid, the pan is aluminum so a magnet won't stick to the pan. However, it did not look that bad.

The filter that was on there had a nylon screen on it, the one I was replaced it with was more of a cotton type filter. Which one is better?

Once changed and buttoned up. I took it out for a spin and the noise got quieter and quieter the more I drove. It shifted fine and rode great!!

Of course now I have a leak around the pan...

How often do I need to drain this fluid since I can't put a magnet in my pan?

Not a daily driver. May drive 5k a year at the most.

Glad to hear its better. I don't think you can go wrong with either filter type. Realistically you shouldn't have to drop the pan and change anything unless you develop a problem. If its leaking from the pan you need to either torque the bolts more or change the gasket and re-torque.
