I'm working on my dad's 57 Chevy nomad, It has an original (rebuilt) 283 with a rebuilt cast iron 2 speed Powerglide.

When my dad started rebuilding this car he wanted to go all original but I talked him into changes to make the car more enjoyable to drive like disk brakes, rack & Pinion, Vintage Air, and Dakota Digital.

I purchased an aftermarket 32" tilt steering column that isnt long enough to get through the firewall. I may cut down the gauge snout, but my concern is; can I run a aftermarket column with the original 2 speed Powerglide?

After some research I am seeing columns that say they will not work with an original Powerglide.

Might consider looking at a used one from GM cars '64/65 and newer. My dad had a new '65 with a column shift tilt column and a 327 & PG trans.

Has there been a reason given from those who said it won't work? There might be some additional fabrication required but I don't see a reason that it "can't" be done.
