So last week, I was rearended and I don't run bumpers on my car. It seems the trunk handle is not an easy item to find. Mine is broken, but not on the chrome T handle portion. It is the steel "sleeve" part and the steel shaft that the key turns to open the trunk. I think I might be able to weld mine back to repair it if I can figure out how the chrome T handle is attached to the "sleeve" part inside it. It rotates seperate from it but I'm pretty sure it is not supposed to. It isn't threaded together. Any ideas how to take to the chrome handle off of this part?

Unfortunately, he didn't pull that steel "sleeve" part that i'm referring to out of the chrome handle. All of what he's showing there I can see how to do. It's just that steel long part that the lock and shaft fits into that I can't figure out.

If there is no visible means of attachment, I would suggest that it is probably a press fit of some sort. Wish I could be more definite in an answer for you...maybe some 1949 owners can chime in.

My 49 handle spun at one time and I made a keyed sleeve to keep it from turning. I'll see if I have pictures of it.

The big question I have is how do you remove that sleeve portion from the t handle itself. The sleeve portion that I’m referring to is the long part with the threaded end that the single nut holds it to the trunk lid from the inside? This sleeve is broken on mine too close to the chrome t handle for me to feel comfortable welding it back with the chrome handle attached unless I have no other choice

The sleeve is pinned to the handle.

I was hoping that the hole that you show there was access to a retainer ring or something, but with the lock cylinder and the shaft removed, there is nothing in that hole, yet the end of the sleeve part is still in the chrome handle, it doesn't seem to extend all the way down into the chrome handle to that area. Maybe I'll just get a little more aggressive in trying to pull it out.

The part that I keep referring to as a sleeve is seen in the exploded view you show as part of the handle. It is the long portion that has the threaded end. Mine broke off just outside (to the right in the view) of the chromed portion. Maybe I can dunk the chrome handle part in a tub of water while I try to weld it back to keep it from heating up the cast chromed part. Apparently the '49 only handle is a really hard to find part. I see a couple on ebay for $$$$. maybe her insurance company will be nice to me.

Yes. That’s the piece. Mine broke at that little groove cut around on it near the handle

Wrap the "T" in wet towels and tig weld it in short passes, let cool in between.

that's kinda what I'm thinking. I'll have to weld the lock shaft also. It broke at the groove machined in it where the little pin goes through this part to retain it too.
