Hi everyone,
A friend of mine owns a 2012 GMC 4dr Canyon. With the exception of a few sensor nuisance issues, it's a good truck with 100,000 miles on the odometer. Now, I realize, it might be a stretch to ask about cosmetic paint flaws on any vehicle that is 9 years old. In this case, my buddy would like to keep this truck for about another 3 years. He noticed rust spots forming and paint flaking in a few areas including; tailgate, around the fuel door and the lower part of the driver side front door. He would like to have the rust spots cleaned-up and re-painted.
Does anyone know what type of metals were used in these areas and whether we should be aware of any special surface preparations before primer and paint?
Thanks

Just curious, is it white paint? I notice a lot of GM pickups, vans and commercial vehicles that have peeling white paint.

It might be a good idea to know what kind of paint system was applied at the factory. The SPID sticker should tell you what kind of paint was applied as well as the paint color code.

Thanks Paulo.
It's dark blue. We'll have a look at the paint code.

It probably won’t say what kind of paint was used, but will have the code. The paint is probably acrylic urethane. The RPO sticker should be on the glovebox lid. Here is a list of the codes:

The method and effectiveness of the repairs will depend on the reason for the rust. If they are from chips, they can probably. be sanded out, properly prepped and primed and painted. The rust at the bottom of the door could be from chips or most likely from water and debris collecting between the skin and shell and rusting out the door. Depending on the extent of the damage it might be advisable to replace the door with a used or new door.
