1965 Impala SS 2 Door
Anyone know what this part is called and/or have a GM part number for it? It is under the rear seat, passenger side. The antenna and speaker wires run under it. There is a number (3802W16) stamped on the top but it doesn't seem to correspond to a proper GM part number and I can't find any info on it. Thanks.

I couldn’t tell you what it came from, but if it were factory it would be spot welded in place, not held down with screws. It looks like a floor brace from something else that has been repurposed to protect the wires that are under it from chafing.

If you look at the Accessory Installation Manual
for rear antenna or rear speaker is doesn't show a part like that. http://toms427impala.info/CT/65AccessoryManual .pdf

I have the identical piece on my 67 Impala. It fits the floor profile perfectly so I doubt that its repurposed. Sure looks like a factory piece to me. Mine is also held with screws. Would be pretty difficult to fish wire/cable if it was riveted on.

Mike, I'm reasonably sure it is factory as I have seen 2 others in cars and I removed 1 out of a parts car. It is screwed on because the wires need to be serviceable. They only used it in very few cars, I'm not sure why some cars got it and most didn't. I've been around several hundred cars and only seen it twice before and now 3 times with your car. I haven't been able to find any more info on it. Good luck hope this helps.

Pretty sure it's a Fisher body part as mine has had it since I bought the car in '75. My car was built in St. Louis. And mine is screwed down as well.
If it's that rare, I wonder if my car is worth more. Haha!

Thanks for your reply. At least I can expand the search to up to 1967 Impalas now, instead of it being the typical one off 65 part. :-)
Your second photo was helpful too regarding a question I have about installing a trunk divider. I'll post another thread about it later.

Mine was built in St. Louis too. I wonder if that is why the part is rare. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply Brandon. Someone else on an Impala Facebook forum mentioned that only Impalas with rear antennas had that part and not many had that. Not sure if that is the reason for the rarity though.

I did a Google search for "Fisher Body 3802W16". I didn't find anything. Anyone have a Fisher Body Parts Manual they can look in to maybe find a name for the part or a cross reference GM part number? I have the Assembly Manual and the Chassis and Body Parts & Illustration catalogs but I don't see anything in those. Thanks.

Thanks Brandon. The St. Louis angle makes more sense for the rarity of this part. I wasn't sure about the rarity of a rear antenna.

There has to be a Fisher body manual out there someplace as Tom has been promising that it's "coming soon" in the reference section. (No offense Tom!) Someone must have one. I'm sure there are those of us who would be willing to scan it and make it available as a resource

Hello, I have a 65 Georgia built Impala SS without a rear antenna, and it has this wire channel in it and it was screwed in place. Due to rear glass water leakage, I welded in a new underseat panel. The front curved section of the channel ,about 4 inches long, was solid with a little surface rust, but the whole back section was garbage. I cut off the front section and duplicated the rest of it by bending up and welding a new rear section.I had no luck finding any info on this piece either, so I just remade it.

Doraville Ga built here, no rear antenna and no such part.
Perhaps an afterthought or (dealer installed?) accessory add-on for those w/rear antenna to protect wiring and keep in its place? There doesn't seem to be the tabs on the floor pan like driver's side for the flat body harness.

It's for factory order rear antenna cars.
You'll also find wire clips screwed along the trans tunnel too.
Dealer rear antenna cars just had the cable taped down instead, and that metal protector was also not part of the 986103 antenna kit for 65 full size.

As for some factory rear antenna cars having it vs some not, it could be a running change added later in 65 production (since it's been seen on later years too), or there were supply interruptions, or the worker didn't bother, who knows.

The cover in mine only protects the seat speaker wire as the factory antenna is on the front fender.

Great info Kevin that the cover was used to protect the wiring for a factory rear seat speaker, or rear stereo speakers on their own, or in combination with a factory rear antenna.
I wonder about the vacuum trunk release hose?
Was it a factory option in 65?
Is the cover big enough to fit the hose and antenna cable and speaker wires?
What about how many things the trans tunnel wiring clips could fit too?

Thanks for all the reply's everyone. I guess the St. Louis connection is a bust. Bill, it was also recommended on another Facebook group that I would probably have to take the old one to a metal shop and have them make one. That will be my last resort, I guess. I'm trying to keep this car all original, if I can. If someone ever comes across this part for sale, please contact me. Hopefully, swap meets will get back into full swing soon and maybe I'll get lucky at one. :-)

Since its hidden under the seat and no one will ever see it, why not just sandblast & paint it?

Wow, that’s a lot of responses. I just wanted to clarify what I was saying. I was saying if it were some kind of brace, it would be welded. Since it seems to be there from the factory and it’s purpose is to protect the wires, then it makes sense that it is screwed down instead of welded. I don’t think the number is a part number. It does not follow the typical GM part number protocol. It may be a stamping number from the manufacturer. If you want to replace it, Eastwood sells remade braces similarly shaped, but it me be a little difficult to put a bend in it to follow the floor contour.

Certainly will hold the wiring and antenna cable. As Paul notes, vacuum trunk release was dealer installed.
I actually ran my rear deck speaker wires through it back in the 8-track days. Of course, I didn't have an antenna wire to contend with.

I have a complete vacuum trunk setup to install except the trunk lid vacuum cylinder is for a 63/64 Buick Riviera instead of my Impala.

Hello, One place you could check is Chevy Parts of Assonet here in Massachusetts. He's supposed to have a lot of NOS stuff along with a yard full of early Chevys. If we can get through the rest of the pandemic, I am going to go there and check it out myself. If you Google it, they have a website with all the info.
