I deleted my earlier post about the noise in my truck. For one thing, there were no replies and only 35 views. I wasn’t surprised since noises are hard to diagnose in person much less over the web. I replaced the axle stub bearing and seal because there was a leak on the left side. Still made the noise. The noise was definitely rotational and matched my speed, but it went away with acceleration and braking. But it was getting worse and sounded like it was at the front. I replaced the last wheel bearing about 25,000 miles ago, so I checked the right side. That bearing and hub were bad, so I replaced it. Still made the noise. So I put it on the lift at work and ran it in gear. It was coming from the rear, not the front.

It turns out the right rear wheel was about to come off. 4 lugs missing, 2 loose, and a broken wheel stud. It egged the holes in the aluminum rim and ruined it. But I’m just thankful it didn’t come off.

That wheel has been on there for a year and a half, so it wasn’t a retightening issue. I was just about to rotate the tires (I only drive about 4,000 miles a year). I have a passive aggressive neighbor who does things to my stuff once in a while when he feels I’ve wronged him somehow. I never feel like I have wronged him in any way ever, but he has mental problems. I certainly hope he wouldn’t do anything that could possibly kill me or someone else. But sometimes mental issues become progressive with time. The only other way would be if someone was trying to steal my wheels, but it’s only parked for any length of time at work or in my driveway and the lugs probably would have still been laying in my driveway if someone got scared off while doing it.

As I was reading this I was trying to remember why it sounded familiar...
I went through almost the exact same on my truck last year.
I had not had the tires off in almost a year. I always properly torque and retorque my lugs.
My left rear had every lug nut holding on by a thread.
None actually came off but I am sure in the blink of an eye it would have. The noise drove me nuts. Sounded like a bad ujoint but wheel speed rather than shaft speed.
Glad you figured yours out.

Glad you were okay. The noise was driving me nuts too. Funny I found the leaking stub shaft seal and the bad wheel bearing because of it. Normally the lugs would have been one of the first things I would have checked, but finding the other problems made me think I had found the source of the noise.

I had my other neighbor check his security camera and he saw nothing on the recordings. But I feel like my truck could be too far back to see that side on his camera view. Plus I think someone could duck down next to the truck and not trip his security camera. I’m going to start pulling my truck further up the driveway and look into cameras for my house. I feel like there are other things he does I’d like to catch him doing. We have had things stolen (things that would not normally be stolen by anyone) and other things like our tires being mysteriously low on air overnight and randomly.

I know what you mean. We are looking to move. Can’t wait to get away from things like this. It’s hard to find a property that we can afford with an area suitable for me to build another shop the size that I want.
