What determines the length of the throwout bearing. I have a stock 57 283 with all original clutch related parts. I installed a muncie 4 speed and will purchase a new clutch pressure plate assembly. Which throwout bearing is correct; short or long? Thanks, Chevi

The original pressure plate has a "flat" diaphragm spring and takes a long throwout bearing.

Later model pressure plates and performance pressure plates have a conical or "raised finger" diaphragm spring and take the short throwout bearing.
