I have a 58 Bel Air. I fill the tank but the gauge only goes to half. It goes down with use as normal, mpg about 12 (1973 350 V8).Any ideas guys?

A float leak can cause some fuel to get in the float and lower the level of the float.

Thanks Don. It has been stood for some time. Gas was cleared out, electrics seem OK (I'm told).

There are only a few things it can be. Float is bad, float is hitting something in tank causing it to stop halfway, wrong sending unit, or float arm does not conform to tank specs (float arm too long or not the correct bend). Gauge should be good since it moves.

Thanks Vern. I'll start with the simplest. The car originally had an inline six and was fitted with a later V8. I don't think that will make a difference. I keep hoping that when I fill up, it will bounce back to full. Wishful thinking!

You can quickly verify if the gage is good by disconnecting the wire from the sending unit in tank then with the ign. switch on the gage should read full. Grounding the wire should result in the gage reading empty

Good advice from Chair City. That's the simplest first step. If the gauge responds as he said, eliminates the gauge (or low voltage to it) as the problem. Then you can have confidence the problem is with the in-tank sender.
You are correct, different engine has no effect on the fuel gauge system.

Won't hurt to try it but if the gauge moves at all, then it is okay. I've never seen a gauge move halfway that was bad. The problem is likely somewhere else.

I have had a similar problem with a 55 and 57. The solution was a new Ford float. I do not recall the part number for the metal float that had a good weld on the seams. Perhaps some other member will remember the part number. Larry
