Hello, My son is finishing up his final deployment and coming home in a few weeks and I wanted to get him a truck he's been wanting as a welcome home gift. I got a good deal on a 1986 Chevy K10. It has an automatic transmission, 5.0, and 68k miles on it. Anyways, I was taking it to get a new paint job and coming down a steep hill, when all of the sudden I started hearing a grinding sound when tapping the brakes coming down the hill. Next I noticed it was like it popped out of gear. I then coasted about three blocks until I finally came to a stop. The truck was still running but it would grind when I tried to shift it into park. I tried several times until finally, I reached down to the 4WD shifter and easily shited from High to Low then back to high. Then I put it into park without any grinding, then shifted to drive and drove off without any problems. Could any of you good folks point me in the right direction? Thanks so very much!

Welcome to the site Daniel86K10.
The unsynchronized gears can be tricky. I know the transfer case NP208 fork design has its flaws. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with it's repair. Checkout a specific 4X4 site here.
Check the linkage bushings too. A missing or old bushing can cause it to shift out of gear. I have break down pictures if you need them.

PDF NP208 breakdown.

Thank your son for his military service. I'm a Veteran myself. I'm sure he'll enjoy the truck as big surprise!
