Hello everyone,
I have been in the market for a project tri-five convertible for about a year now and I keep running into middle men, over priced originals, or complete rust buckets, so after all the frustration I'm considering a new body. Does anyone have any experience with these? What are the pros and cons? What about a VIN and cowl tag? Is there more than one company making these?

They look great and the prices are very reasonable. Any comments will be appreciated.
Thank you!
Fred

I don’t know how many companies are making new bodies, but it was at least two. One company was all new, another was using used cowls as a base so that there was an original VIN tag and could be titled as an old car whereas the other would probably need a state issued VIN. It also may need to adhere to emissions standards that an old car would not. Please note that these cowls were being bought up from any model car and therefore may not have the “C” in the VIN indicating that it is a Bel Air, which all convertibles were built as. Also remember there cars have a ton of trim that do not come with the bodies, so you have to either buy all of it piece by piece or buy a parts car with at least most of the trim present. You also have to provide the chassis and suspension as well as the drivetrain, glass and interior.

I read that too a while back about " you supply the cowl",
for 5-6-7 sedans you would want the "A" pillar.
The link I posted directs you to every state for legal matters,
I looked through my states rules, does not sound that easy to title as year 1955-6 or 7,
kit car route? Why bother.

If you have an original cowl (or the new body built around an original cowl) with the VIN tag attached and a matching clear title you can register it as that year vehicle.

Thank you for the information, this is great stuff. I'm leaning towards the original cowl option, I feel it would be worth it. Thanks again!
