:mad : Went out this morning temperature at 26% maybe 35% inside the garage
and after starting car and shifting into reverse there was a whining noise
from the 2004r that lasted about 5 seconds , reverse to drive the same thing
and after car warmed up noise went away.
Checked trans fluid latter in the day when the transmission was hot and the
level was at full. any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Paul

Has it been a while since you started it? The fluid can drain out of the valve body and even gravitate out of the pump. I’m no expert, but it could have been the pump refilling all of the areas that the fluid ran out of. I am certainly no expert on transmissions, so this is just my thought on the problem. When you start your car up after it’s been sitting for a while you should start it in neutral since the pressure is lower in neutral than it is in park. I also usually disconnect the coil and crank the engine to distribute the oil before firing it and having it run with only a little oil present with a load on the motor.

Yep ! that is what I was thinking, with this winter weather and not starting the the car for weeks at a time I'm sure it drains some.
Filter & fluid are about a year old, always start the car in neutral. Thanks Again Paul.

What makes you think that? Hydraulically, inside the valve body, oil is directed exactly the same way in neutral and park.
Back to the original question, is this a new thing or has it always done this?

It was advice given in an article a long time ago about getting your car back up and running after winter storage. If I’m not mistaken it was in Super Chevy. Again, I am not a trans expert.

This is a new thing. Starts up great then I let it idle for 3 minutes then put in reverse or drive and it will whine for about 5 seconds. after I Drive it for awhile it's normal. Sounds to me like the pump is pressurizing a dry system. I am not a mechanic. Just my guess.  Paul

FWI it has been my experience that when the fluid runs into the pan the car won't move until the oil gets pumped to the rest of the transmission, particularly the torque converter.
