So you had to take 1/8" off the starter nose mounting flange?

Correct. Used a 40 grit flapper wheel to shave just over 1/8" off the mounting surface and bring the pinion to ~1/8" of the flexplate. I pulled the bendix gear out to mesh with the flex plate and it meets with a gap just a little wider/looser than a paperclip.

add on. The bendix meshes approx 2/3 - 3/4 of the flexplate when fully extended. AND... just saw you are from Canada... I first saw this resolution on a youtube post from a Canadian! Also read many forum posts (more than I expected) of folks with the same issue. Other noted solutions are no washers on bolts and supposed to torque to 35-45 pounds. Use of blue threadlocker. Shimming the outside bolt was supposed to bring the bendix closer to the flexplate as well but I did not have any success with that. lastly the bracket from the front of the starter to the engine block to keep everything as still as possible.
