For those of you that have installed ls engines in 55,56,or 57 chevy's is it necessary to do any modifications on the fire wall other than plugging up unneeded holes. I don't think so but just checking, before I get to far and find out that I was wrong. I'm getting the ls engine pretty soon so I want to finish the work on the fire wall.

On my very modified 57 Nomad, I chose to cut out that rounded firewall and fabricate a new one that looked better with the LS engine. Also made just a bit more room at the back of the engine. But more importantly, you may need to modify the transmission tunnel to get one to fit in there.
Mine has a T56 6 speed, and it's much taller...requiring tunnel sheetmetal modifications.

Note that in the previous replay that he made the firewall mod for appearance. You do not have to do this for the engine to fit in the engine bay and clear the firewall.
On the other hand, some transmissions that are typically used with an LS engine need additional transmission tunnel clearance. This includes 6 speed manual and 6 and 8 speed automatics. 4 speed automatics clear the tunnel.
The other thing that may happen here is that depending on what belt accessory drive, radiator/fan setup, and intake tube arrangement you have, things may get tight at the front of the engine. But with the right combination of parts it will all fit without firewall mods.
