Question for the Paypal Acct Holders out there.

Did you have to give them your Social Security Number?

No I didn’t . I did open my own account for just the PayPal and ebay and Amazon. That way nothing goes through the house account. Don’t keep a lot of money in it in case it got hacked. If I buy on line, everything goes through the PayPal account. If they don’t accept PayPal then I don’t buy from that person.

I did get an E-mail, but not only does it look pretty official, we have been going back and forth with my application process.

That's my main concern, getting hacked. They gave me the account and everything was fine, till I found out I only have limited privileges. When I questioned why, they said they need more info from me. I gave them a whole bunch of it, although now they want my SSN.

What I have found out in the meantime, is the place is run by a bunch of idiots.

And if they wanted that, why didn't they ask me for it in the first place before approving my account.

With their continued incompetence, I'm hesitant with trusting them with it.

To add a little more, you can't call them, that doesn't get you any where. You get a use-less message and then it hangs up on you.

And their online Messaging Service pretty much stinks.

Further having mis-trust with them.

If you got an email DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR SS# They will never ask you for it through email EVER.

That is the #1 phishing method of getting SS#

I don't ever remember having to give SS# for banking transactions with maybe exception of loans.

But it is ALWAYS part of the form if at all

I agree. I would never reply to the E-mail, but I'm back online with them on the Messaging Board. Although it's been about 3 hours now and I still haven't heard back from them (see what I mean, lol).

In the meantime I'm wondering if them asking for the SSN is routine or not.

I would not trust them for that answer. .

Personally If online retailers won't accept pay from bank via credit card, I won't do business with them. If your with a good bank their protection plan is sufficient to protect you.

What you don't realize is credit cards is NOT your money. Its the banks and financial institutions.

legit businesses and such won't mess with that because of the hefty penalties and criminal charges they would face, when finally caught.

Bill, when you want access your PayPal account, DO NOT use links in emails because they are probably bogus. Go straight to www.PayPal.com and sign in.
I would give them a call if you are having a problem. Once you sign in, click on the "Contact" at the bottom. Scroll down to see your options.
Don't fool with these emails.

As in Banking, Credit Card and IRS matters a legit company will never have you supply that level of info via email.

I'd consider your described correspondence to be extremely out of the norm.

What sort of account are you trying to open on PayPal? Is it to allow you to take credit cards or some other commercial option?

Just to make it clear to everyone, the E-mail was just an alert for me to respond to it at the Paypal site.

Just about any activity at Paypal give me alerts on it by E-mail. Unless I'm wrong, I believe everyone gets these alerts.

Tony,

I opened a regular Business Paypal account.

The problem was that they approved my account with the info that they asked for and the info we gave them at the time. Everything was running fine, so I thought. I was sending out requests for my sales, receiving money in my account and transferring it to my recently opened separate Checking Account. I then find out I only have limited privileges and all of a sudden, they want more info. I gave them more. But that still wasn't good enough and after much confusion and back and forth very delayed communication (tried calling, but that didn't work as mentioned above) on their Messaging Board, they wanted my Social Security Number. During all the confusion, delayed messaging, poor communication, being told the wrong info, questions gone unanswered, different people jumping in at different times, point of problem getting lost and much more not even mentioned, I made the simple determination that the place was being run (trying to be nice here) by a bunch of clowns. Which made me dis-trust the place. I then decided that there was no way I was giving this sub-standard operation my SSN.

My beef is that if they wanted my SSN, why didn't they just ask me for it in the very beginning at the time of my application and more importantly before they approved my account.

What's funny is, although hesitant, I probably would have given it to them.

I then decided that I was satisfied enough just to use it as it is with limited privileges, but no, there's more. They then tried freezing my account. That did it for me, I want out. I somehow got the system to transfer my money and my balance is now zero. Once everything is finalized, I'll be closing the account.

I had avoided Paypal for 19 years and I'll just go back to my regular way of conducting business normally, as I have been.

Appreciate all the replies.
