I have my 55 Belair 3 speed manual transmission with overdrive removed for clutch work. I have been chasing a vibration for quite some time that happens about 55 mph and above. Because of what I have ruled out I suspect the vibration may be coming from the transmission. I have no transmission experience. I am asking for advice from those who may be familiar with this tranny as to what i can check in the tranny that may be causing the vibration while it is out. Your input appreciated. Thanks

Before the transmission. Have you verified that the pilot bushing in the crank is not worn oversize at the bore? Have you verified that the universal joints have no play?

Does the vibration go away when you let off the gas or push in the clutch? It's not very likely that the transmission will cause a vibration.

A little about my vibration. I installed new u joints and have had the driveshaft balanced. I installed new motor mounts. Vibrates in or out of overdrive while accelerating or coasting or maintaining speed Clutch in or out makes no difference. Have tried shutting engine off at about 65 mph no difference. Transmission in second or third makes no difference. Put new balanced tires on no change. Also checked run out of tires.Also checked for correct angles between engine driveshaft and rear end. Front end in good shape no play. I have owned the car about four years has done it since I got it.I have not checked pilot bearing but will. Thanks for your comments any other comments appreciated.

Is the differential open or posi traction? With the rear end jacked up, can you feel any roughness when manually rotating the tires? Any noise from rear end?

Could just be that the Ujoints are out of phase

Car is presently up on jacks I just rotated rear wheels seems smooth and quiet. It is not a positraction rear end probably the stock 4:11 rear end that I believe came with the overdrive cars.

i would put the car on jackstands and rotate the driveshaft to see if there is any runout. are your wheels hubcentric?

You may have a worn rear bushing in the transmission and also some wear on the driveshaft front yoke. It should also leak oil from the rear seal as a result.

If the vibration is't occurring ALL the time, but only AFTER reaching 55 MPH, then you have an issue other than in the drive-train, possibly tire/wheel balance or front end issues. Even with multiple attempts at wheel balancing, that's where I would still look; if you've already had this done, then have it redone elsewhere. JMO.

Thanks so much for your inputs I have checked the driveshaft yoke for wear and seems to be ok the yoke diameter is okay and not much play when engaged in the transmission output shaft Butch I am going to pursue your thoughts on the possible tire problem. I have put on new tires but I would like to install maybe borrow a known good set of mounted tires to see what happens.Will keep you guys posted.Thanks again

Well apix17 what have you come up with? Any place that does a spinning balance check while on the car?
I don't know if a weight came off of a brake drum if you could feel it?

Mel I have not pursued the problem any further. I presently have the car in my garage replacing all the clutch linkage. Next project is vibration. Thanks for your interest.Will update you when I have some new information.

I had a harmonics type vibration at higher speeds that was cured by finding a tire shop that took extra time with my car. Moved all wheel weights around and put them in the center of the wheel rather than clipped to the outer edge of the wheel. It made a world of difference for mine.
