I am just discovering hydraulic throw out bearings. Would like to know if anyone has experience with them and if so what is your opinion as to operation and reliability. Thanks.

The factory has been using hydraulic throwout bearing for over 50 years. The first one I has was in 62 half-ton, 292 I owned. They are used in everything from said pickup to F-350 Diesels. There was one in my 96 Z-28.
They used brake fluid, so you had to be careful if you topped it off. If you used ATF, you were in trouble.
As far as reliability, I had no issues with any of them. 250,000 miles on the F-350.

There's more than one way to do a hydraulic clutch. I don't think the factory used a hydraulic throwout bearing until the 90s.
Anything prior to that was a slave cylinder rather than a hydraulic throwout bearing, including the 93-97 Z-28. All the truck deals from the 60s on were master/slave setups. A master/slave setup uses a clutch fork. A hydraulic throwout bearing does not.
To me, fitting a clutch master cylinder to a car that doesn't have one is a PITA. The only reason to do it is because the car has been modified so much (or butchered) so that stock mechanical linkage can't be used - or that you have a transmission setup like a T56 6 speed that used a hydraulic TOB from the factory and using mechanical linkage would be very difficult because of the way the bellhousing is built.
The aftermarket hydraulic TOBs had a reputation for leaking prematurely for many years. I don't know if they are any better recently.

Rick,
You are correct. I was just referring to the hydraulics, and that they were pretty dependable. I have never run an aftermarket tob. so cannot speak to the leak issues.
I replaced a clutch in a Ford Ranger that had one. I believe it was a late 80's.
Personally, I have no love for mechanical linkage clutches. I know.........I know. DZ will probably jump in here. As much as I respect his opinions, I stll have mine. I love the hydraulic setups.
