I have a 1961 impala with a 1965 409 engine. I am having a problem starting the engine. If the car sits for one or more days it is very hard to start. I pump the peddle sometimes 5 or more times and sometimes it will start and sometimes I hold the peddle all the way to the floor. So far I have replaced the starter, added a check valve on the fuel line just before the mechanical fuel pump, new carbs. If I remove the air cleaner, look down into the top of the carb. and pump the throttle I do see the gas squirting. The fuel pump is not leaking but it is a small block pump which I understand is OK to use on a 409. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe a float bowl is leaking
Is there evidence of fuel on the intake?

once running... is all ok? Idle, acceleration, etc? How's your vacuum, sparkplugs, wires, etc? When it does start, do the spark plugs "Spark" (i.e., pull each plug, checking both engine block ground and the ignition coil in the process?). Are you still using points?... check dist cap... clean and no moisture?

Hi Belair

Is your choke working properly? Should be closed when cold. Fully open when hot.
