I plan on a rebuild of my 1990 5.7 in the near future. sometime in the next year unless everything goes south sooner!

Even though I'm an old motor head from way back, I've been out of the loop for the past 30+ years

My plan is to not have big horsepower. I just want a clean running engine and maybe as a bonus a bump in HP with maybe a little better mileage. I plan to stay with the TBI.

I want to go roller cam and possibly different heads. I know the stock swirl port heads kind of suck. Maybe roller rockers if budget permits. Everything else pretty much stock.

I have a person that recommended an L98 cam. He also has a 3K mile he wants to sell. (how convenient!) Is this a viable option for the 90 5.7? What heads would be compatible with my current block and intake manifold? I know the Vortec heads fit the block but something about the intake is different?????

Thank you for your input! Right now this is my biggest hurdle.

Nothing wrong with an L98 cam, but I think I would go with a new cam rather than used. Cams are pretty cheap comparatively and money saved buying a used one may not be worth it. Plus you may be able to buy a cam kit that makes even more power for a good price.
The Vortec heads are great heads and make excellent power with lower lift cams. They do require their own intake (8 bolts for Vortec vs. 12 bolt for traditional small block. Here is a good read on the Vortecs: ...

Thanks for that. I didn't want to buy a new/used intake but I can do that if needed.

I'll take a gander at the link you provided. Thank you!
