Just bought a 55 chevy belair, 327 with powerglide trans mission. The tranny seems good, but thinking down the road switching to 350 turbo. How involved would it be? drive shaft? transmission mounts?

Does the 327 have an aluminum Powerglide bolted to it? If so, I think I'd leave it the way it is. BUT, if you still want 3 forward gears, it's a fairly easy swap. You may or may not need a new slip yoke, depending on what Powerglide the car currently has. Do you still have the column shifter? That can be made to work also with the kits sold for the shift indicator and the rod to connect to the transmission. Does the 327 have the stock front mounts, or aftermarket side mount kit? Stock front mounts, then go with an aftermarket mid mount kit and a rear transmission cross member. If the engine is side mounted already, then add a rear cross member. As you can see, we need a little more information to adequately answer your question about what may be needed. If you do go with a TH350, then get the "short" one; it'll be the same length as a stock Powerglide, and you won't have to change your driveshaft; possibly just the slip yoke. It has the cast transmission housing with stock front motor mounts. The transmission seems to work ok, just the gear indicator in the dash seems to need the indicator rod or something, it doesn't move. Thanks for the information.

You'd want the "short" TH-350 trans, you'll need the 27 spline (fine spline) slip yoke, side mount the trans AND use a rear cross-member/mount. OR, side mount the engine and use a rear cross-member/mount (better way). Use the shifter linkage kit and the shift indicator display/detent (you can repair what's wrong with it at that time also). TH-350's use a cable kick-down, and there are a fe2w aftermarket kits for that also. You'll need a different flex-plate and a block mounted starter motor also. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Thanks , I'm sure there is aftermarket cross members and everything else needed. Haven't researched it but does the entire column have to come apart to repair the indicator rod. Looks like there's a bottom cover on the column that comes off.

There's a cover that goes from the column up to the speedometer cluster; that cover pops off and you should be able to access the rod linkage, as small as it is. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I had the same setup in a 57 as you do. JMHO but I wouldn't waste my money on a 3 speed. I went with a 700r4 and the old 327 really liked the upgrade. Besides the much lower 1st gear. if you go on the highway the rpm's will go down about 1000 depending on your rear gear ratio.

Found a video of gauge removal, showed what you described, took it off can see where the linkage hooks to pin in column was unsure if you had to disassemble column more. thanks, have new one ordered, mine was gone.

Yes on shortening the drive shaft and a different yoke.
I also installed a different shift indicator in the dash. I bought an extension for the speedometer cable but you may need that for a 350 but I am not sure. Some replace the whole cable with a longer one. You will need a TV cable kit. I recommend the Bowtieoverdrives setup. Its not cheap but very good.
