Hello everyone,

I have a 61 with a repro power steering pump. It had modern power steering fluid in it. Once in a while when it gets real hot out, ps seems to fade.

I drained the fluid this morning and flushed with denatured alcohol. Filled it with dexron 3 which I thought was correct but now the pump seems to have a whine like i used to hear on old cars.

Fluid looks a little bubbly but level is correct. Should i give it some miles or go back to more modern ATF or back to PS fluid?

Thanks gentlemen,

Cheers
Oscar

Try draining it again, and refilling with PS fluid. Maybe all of the alcohol wasn't out of the system yet.

When I had power steering fluid in my '62, the PS didn't work well. Drained it and added ATF (Dextron), and all is now well. I didn't flush because the two oils are somewhat compatible.

Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.

I would have to agree with Junky. I ran PS fluid in my 63 Impala with stock power steering and it steered kind of hard. I switched to Dexon and have had better results. On my 62 all I have used is Dexon and it has been great. These cars came from the factory with ATF in the power steering.

thanks everyone, will drain it again and pour new DEXRON 3; if that doesn't fix it, then I guess PS fluid like it had before but I'd prefer the ATF just like was meant for it.

DEXRON 3 had to be ordered, and I prefer not to waste it if any of the new DEXRONs would work the same or better....

the pump is a period correct replacement, but that shouldn't change anything, right?

thanks again...

I have PS fluid in my 62. Works fine, very easy steering.

thanks Ron, PS fluid worked well most times - but the heat and humidity here in S Florida made me notice an interruption in the assist on hot days. this was my first try at ATF in this car...

No matter what you use if the fluid is aerated the pump will whine. If you let it sit a while it will self bleed, the fluid will clear up and the pump should quiet down.
Might take a while.
