The gas tank in my 54 is leaking.Has anyone bought a tank from National Chevy? They cut the filler neck in half to cut down on over size shipping. You have to connect the neck back together with a rubber hose. With shipping total comes to around $207.00.For $36.00 more I can get a tank from Rock Auto without the filler neck cut. Anyone ever deal with Rock Auto? Which one would you buy?

I've not bought much for the 49 from rockauto, but I've bought many parts for my other vehicles. Personally, after parts issues in the past with NC, I've avoided them. Cutting the fill neck to save shipping? I rest my case.

LOL, I bought my tank from Tanks Inc. It came with the filler neck cut. I did not think anything about it and to be honest, could not care less. It was not a detriment.

As far as NCA and Rock Auto, I regularly use them both without issue.

One thing about Rock Auto is they ship from many different warehouses. You can order three items which ship from three different warehouses and get billed three different shipping charges. That certainly does not always happen but it is something to look out for.

If you order from Rock Auto, here is a promotional code number that will save you 5% until August something. Enter it in the "how did you hear about us box."

I paid 264 bucks for the one I put in my 52, that was several years ago and the fill pipe was not cut. Still more that what you are seeing at around 240.00.

I got mine from NCA and the filler neck was not cut. I've been buying from NCA since 1991, but it's true their quality is down on some items.

Yep--its a real love-hate relationship with NCA.

If you are looking for a fun project, you could try refurbishing and sealing/lining your existing tank. I bought a kit from Eastwood and was very happy with the results.

Sorry to post this information this late but I have not been on the site for a couple of days. I purchased my gas tank from Chevrolet Restoration World near Dayton Ohio. I did pick it up so removing the filler neck was not an issue. I just checked their web site and the price for a steel tank is $149.00 part # EM 600111. I also had issues with NCA in the past. I purchased gas tank filler tube hoses, BUT they are regular rubber hose and not gasoline resistant. The 1949-54 under battery air duct did not fit right. I made my own and used their duct as a very expensive shelf in my garage.

Ii had the original tank cleaned, sealed and reinstalled it, by the second year I was going through fuel filters about every hundred miles so I just purchased a new tank.A friend sent his tank to California for a complete redo, came back with a bunch of holes used to access the tank for cleaning. Well patched, and he was entirely satisfied.

Are plastic tanks still available? Last time I looked, they were cheaper than new steel ones. I had my original tank boiled out and sealed at a radiator shop. Spent more than just buying a new one- wish I could do that over! The neck bolts on to the tank- why would they have to send it in two pieces?

The neck on my 53's tank isn't bolted on. There are 2 bolts there but I think they are for alignment purposes.

I tried to unbolt the neck off my old tank. I found out it still would not come off after unbolted,I had to take a chisel to remove it.

did you happen to look inside the vent tube to see if it happens to have the whistle? it might be located close to the tank. if you do see it check the size of the hole if you can. might be 1/8" or so.I want to recreate this for my tank.
thanks in advance, bill

I don't know what the vent pipe is but if you are referring to the filler neck, there was nothing in mine. Hope this answers your question.

I got my tank from Summit yesterday. The tank was manufactured by Tanks Inc. There were a couple of things I wasn't`t happy about with this tank. The first thing was it was from made in Taiwan. Second was I couldn't`t use my gas cap because the filler neck where the gas cap goes on was different so I cut the filler neck off my old tank and used the top half. The biggest problem was when I lined up the holes to install my gas gauge float the baffles in the tank were in the way so I had to drill a new hole in the gauge to line up one hole.I have not installed it yet but hopefully no problems when I put it back together tomorrow.

Don't use a radiator cap censored they are not vented. You may know this but some others do not.
