Wondering if anybody is using a Mini starter
what have you found to be the best one for handling the heat from headers and a high torque 355 motor? I don't think the one on there now could turn a hot drill bit in a bucket of Lard.

A mini starter should be less sensitive to heat than an OEM starter. What are your symptoms? How close is the starter to exhaust?

Hello Rick. This is on my sons car he told me its a cheap mini starter off brand that has no name on it. He told me his 355 motor turns over really slow .I told him his timing may be off some. He said it has always turned over slow but ran. But now its even slower. He put in new battery and heat shield to cover headers still slow. Replaced cables and even pulled out all plugs and tried, still turning over slow even with second new battery. He's looking at getting another starter next. Both battery's he bought have 800 cca. I don't think its binding around the transmission . I was asking so I can call him and let him know what you guys think and if you could say what brand starter would be good with close headers . Motor is suppose to have over 400 HP.

I had 3 cars with BBC's & a 57 Chevy with a SBC with a built 350. I have had the GM mini starters on all the cars for years with never any problems or starting issues.

Voltage drop could be contributing to you issue. Heat from your headers will amplify your voltage drop as well.

This can be solved by installing a relay for your starter.

Check the condition of the wire between the battery + and the starter. Check the cleanliness of the connections on each end of the wire. Often times, they get oxidized, brittle, and begin NOT to transfer electrons with such volume. Don't rule it out...check it thoroughly.
