Tony, I just realized that your Avatar seems to be a 1949 Chevy, I zoomed it in but it gets fuzzy and I couldn't really tell. When I was stationed at US Naval Air Station, Miramar, CA. I bought a 1949 Chevy in San Diego in 1961. Sept. 1962 I drove it home to Atlanta, Ga. and gave it to my younger brother and my dad took me to look for another car and that's when I bought my 1960 Chevy Impala, in my avatar.

Thanks for asking. Thats actually a photo of my dad and his car around 1954. I really don't know what year it is, it was a dull forrest green as I recall. I do remember driving around in the back as a kid. We got a new Chevy in 1962 and this one was traded.

My dad passed away in 1997. I came across this photo a few years ago and figured I'd use it as a tribute to him and get him some publicity. ha

I'm guessing that many folks believe that to be me, but it isn't. Can anyone tell me what year and model it is?

The vented parking lights design and the no tooth flat center grill bar say sit is a 51.

Unquestionably, the top picture is a 50.
The next picture is a 51.
The 49-50-51-52 have VERY distinct differences both in the front and the rear.
Same with 53-54, they have very distinct differences ---------------- provided a person is familiar with each year model.

Now, with that said, who knows what we have here?

Your Dad's Chevrolet is a 1951. If the lower color was a dull green as you say, my guess is that it was paint code 452, Fathom Green Metallic [upper], Aspen Green Metallic [lower]. It is a little difficult to say exactly what body style it is from the angle the photo was taken though. I'm going to say it was not a Belair though as it was no offered in that paint combination.

Okay DZ, I'm going to play. We have a 51 grill top bar. We have 52 parking lights. There is no Deluxe or hockey stick over the stone guard. It's blue. I'm saying it's a 51 Styline with 4 doors? Oh and the grill teeth are Corvette?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOK, you're right, I did not see the vertical bars BETWEEN the parking light bars. You really gotta look close. I see them now, so for sure, it is a 49. If I had seen the trunk, I would have immediately seen it was a 49.

Top and bottom bars and parking light surround are 51 (ORIGINAL to the car).
Center bar is 52.
Parking lights are 52.
Teeth are 54.

Once upon a time, long, long ago (when I was in the Army in early 60s), it had a 54 Pont center grill. And 1960 Corvette full wheel covers. Wish I had never got rid of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the front bumper, below the left headlight, is the military sticker when I was at Ft. Sam Houston. Anyone remember those big bumper stickers?
Also, notice the sunvisor. When my Granddad bought it, he had that added. Other than that, the ONLY option was the fresh air heater.
I had to remove the heater core box (BIG, BIG mistake!!!) when I replaced the 6cyl (261 with Corvette carbs and ex manifold) with a V8 (283) and 2x4 carbs. Years later, the 2x4s were replaced with a Z28 intake and Holley. Well, at least the 2x4s are back on it (35yrs later).

I'll be son of a gun! That's the same car? I should have gotten the grill teeth. I'm thinking the hood airplanes were different between 51 and 52 also? As for the 283, my 67 Impala Fastback had that and the 2 speed Powerglide. I loved that car and always had a yearning for another 283. Just because...

Yep, 51-52 hood airplanes were different. I like the 51 better.

Thank you Tony. You said that your dad was 36 in the picture well I was just a 20 year old know it all in mine, it's hard to believe that was nearly 60 years ago. I talked to my younger brother this morning about when I gave the '49 to him and he said that as far as he can remember he had the car for about a year and sold it to our cousin and then bought a 1958 Chevy. My cousin said that he wrecked it about a year after he got it. Thank you for the bigger picture of the car and your dad. Lamar

I'm gonna take a stab here and say your father is positioning a "POLAR CAVES" bumper sticker to the '51 [I can't make out the other one]. Do you remember vacationing in New Hampshire?

I was born in 56 so I think those travels were with my mom only. We did do alot of car vacays when I was a young kid up and down the east coast from Maine to Florida, especially Wildwood NJ. My dad loved cruising.

I see your location as Orange County...but knowing that the East Coast was in your past, I think I got the bumper sticker right.

That indeed is a 1950 and I'm gonna guess a 4 Door Fleetline. The vehicle to the right is a Buick. As dark as the finish looks in this B/W photo, I'm gonna say it was painted Mayland Black. Accessories include, visor, spotlight, peep mirror, radio [antenna anyway, I'm gonna assume a radio is in the dash], front and rear fender guards, and grille guard. You mentioned traffic light viewer as well.

Thank you for that information. So it seems that we were riding in style , not bad for a dad that worked his tail off so we could have what we needed but not necessarily what we wanted. Lamar
