Hello;
Have not posted in a while but have a problem that needs answers.
I noticed while driving that the check instrument light (thingy) is on. Upon further investigation I am seeing that my engine temp gage seems to not be working.
Could this be from a temp sender going bad?
I don't have a clue where to even look for it!

Bruce

Which engine 4.2 I6 or 5.3? The 5.3 temp sensor is way in the back behind the upper intake. The '08 sensor is on block rear left side.

Up to '05 - The 4.2 sensor is near/behind the alternator. You need an 18mm crow foot wrench. The battery has to come out. The alternator has come out too. Six bolts and bracket need come off.

How old is the thermostat? Is the fan clutch working properly?

Whern I took the Mrs. to work this morning the check gage light was on and I noticed the water temp gage didn't seem to be working.
Then I got ready to go out for an appointment (hr. later) and the light on the dash didn't light and the gage seemed to be fine!??
Guess its one of those "catch me if you can" kind of problems.
Would this problem be able to be seen with a scanner?

Wouldn't hurt to use a scanner to confirm gauge working or not.

Yes, I know my Actron CP9580 can read temps. If you don't have one, get an ODBII plug in. Wifi for iphones. Bluetooth for Andriods. A free app or low cost app will connect and do almost as much as a hand held scanner. For my iphone, I use Dash Command. An ELM327 adaptor plugs into the ODBII port. A nonclone ELM327 costs ~$20-25. Clones usually costs less. The Dash Command app is like $10. Plus you can buy add on features for your particular vehicle too.
