It's my understanding the '3 on the tree' was the standard, base transmission for these cars. Back then automatics were usually optional. Most SS models had either the powerglide 2 spd auto or a 4 spd. Big blocks could be had with the THM400. If you have a Biscayne, Belair or 'plain' Impala the 3 spd was most likely the choice. My 3 spd SS seems quite rare but to date I've been unable to find any info regarding #s built, etc.

For what it's worth, my '66 Impala SS was a 283 cu. in. 3-spd on the trees... see my build link in my signature.. It shows the all, i.e, window sticker, build sheet, vin tag, etc.

Thanks Paul:
That info is great. I have been looking for the correct info for over 15 years. Do you happen to know how many full size Chevys were produced in 1965. I have heard that 1965 was Chevrolets largest production year for full size Chevys.

Coming from a guy who was a punk kid when 65 impala came out. When I was 16 in 1968. and in 1968 it was fairly common to find a 65 with a three speed. I would guess about third or fourth. Of all impalas. Most were power glide. always go look because it could have a speed in it. I knew several with three speeds.

1966 there was less by a little.

1967 there was less by more. maybe less than fourth.

1968 very few. most all were power glide and some 400s auto. I think 400s three speed automatic came out then and just about stopped three speed manuel.

First 65 Impala I ever saw was Dark Aqua-- Med. Aqua.. Neighbor got it.. 283 powerglide.

thank you stano

Not sure on total full size production #s but Impala alone set an as yet unbeaten sales record of over a million in '65
