For those who wish to convert their front ball wheel bearings to tapered roller bearings, the source I have used for MANY years is Allied Bearing in Los Angeles. https://www.yellowpages.com/listings/9492737/dire c...
They ONLY fit 49-54 pass cars and 53-62 Corvettes. Some of the aftermarket Chevy and Corvette vendors sell them, but at a higher price than Allied (Allied MAY be the importer). These roller bearings for early Chevys and Vettes are NOT available through retular auto parts sources/stores such as NAPA, O'Reilly, etc.

Here is what the inner and outer roller bearings look like.

Assuming they fit right into the stock hub? How hard to get them in without any special tooks?

The races come with the bearings, and they almost drop in, snug them up, and back the nut off to the next hole for the cotter pin, spin the wheel to see if it spins. That spin is why drums on the front are better than discs.

Do you have a torque setting or do you just run them up until the wheel is hard to turn and back them off until the hole lines up?

Never torqued front wheel bearings in my life, but that is my own way.

If the spindle nut is snug enough to restrict the wheel from spinning, it's too tight. I run the nut up slightly snug, and then drop back to the previous notch. But if it doesn't spin freely back off one more notch.

When installing these is a guy able to run the factory wheel seal or does the conversion require a different seal?

Didn't they convert from roller bearings to tapered bearings due to the additional loads that the tapered bearings could handle?

People fear change because it threatens what they know, or what they claim to know.

I believe recommended procedure is spinning the drum/disc counterclockwise as you snug the nut then back off to nearest hole for the pin and check for free spinning and no play

Bearing MFG is my go-to for converting front ball wheel bearings to tapered roller bearings. They've been reliable for years, offering parts not found in regular auto stores. Worth checking out for 49-54 passenger cars and 53-62 Corvettes
