I have a 2013 Malibu and the mechanic even showed me pictures of my brake pads which are 80% intact. I feel that they are spongy and a bit weak and it has been 3 years and the mechanic keeps telling me they are good.

Any suggestions or input or? I am just confused if my brake pads are good why do the brakes feel mediocre.

Maybe there's air in the system. Try bleeding your brakes.

If you feel they are not right and the current mechanic says they are fine I suggest you get a second opinion.
Did they get spongy over time?
When was the last time they were serviced? Sticking slides over time can cause a spongy pedal as the inner pad will wear and cause the piston to have to move farther than normal.
Another thing could be a failing master cylinder
