I used air bags on my old Malibu. The kind that are for helping with extra weight, not the air bag suspensions that are more prevalent these days. These bags fit inside the factory coil spring and lifted the back of the car nicely and still gave a good ride.

I had a new 1970 SS454 (LS5) and put air bags in the coil springs way back then. They lasted about a month and a rock or something sliced one of them. Maybe they are made better now days but they sure did not last back then.

The best way would be to use station wagon coils.

I use air shocks on our 70. They have been on there for about 20yrs with ZERO issues. I prefer air shocks over air bags--------------------
BUUUUUUUUT, with that said, I have BOTH air bags and air shocks, plus variable rate sptings, on our Cutlass.

+1 on using air bags. They won't add stress to the suspension system.
