Lately I’ve noticed when I fire up my truck the oil pressure is barely at the 40 mark. on the back roads driving at 65 mph it takes a while before it gets up close to the 60 mark. Maybe I haven’t paid attention to it in a while but I could of swore it was usually close to the 60 mark most of the time.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

As engines wear clearances increase and oil pressure drops. What is your hot engine idle oil pressure?

Rule of thumb is 10 # of oil pressure for 1000 rpm.

I’m going to pay attention to the RPMs on my way to work later. Hot engine idle I don’t remember for sure but I want to say 40 I’ll definitely take a look at those two this afternoon.

Info from the Chevy Silverado service manual

Oil Pressure - Minimum - Hot

6 psig at 1,000 engine RPM

18 psig at 2,000 engine RPM

24 psig at 4,000 engine RPM

I know we all like to see higher numbers, this is the spec that Chevy uses to determine low oil pressure. My 4.8 (75,000 miles, previously used as a snow plow) shows around 40 psi cruising (around 2000 rpm).

At hot idle it drops back down to the 40 Mark. Up close to 60 at higher speeds. I’m wondering if it could be a bad oil pump or pick up tube/gasket. Up untill recently I believe it was always close to the 60 mark.

40 # at idle and 60# at highway speed is fine. I don't believe you have any problems.
