I didn't know if this was the right place to ask this question but I'll give it at try.I've got a tri-five with an early 350/350. Starter wouldn't crank so I replaced it. It's really noisy and after a few seconds of cranking it makes a loud clanking noise. Worse when hot. Got another new starter and same thing. Replaced the battery. Sounds like something is going to come apart, really loud. I shimmed the starter to specs, no difference. I inspected all the ring gear teeth and they look good. I'm wondering if the flex plate is broken? I hate to have the trans removed just to look. Are these flex plates known to crack, is it common?

Yes and yes.

You might try removing the inspection cover and looking inside.

A cracked flex plate doesn't usually make for starter noise problems.

The usual symptom is there will be a rapping or clanging noise on moderate acceleration, accompanied by a low frequency vibration or shudder. This occurs at low speeds, like 3-5 mph, and then disappears once you are underway.

Did you buy a starter shim kit at the auto supply and follow the directions in the kit?

No vibration when driving it, seems normal. It happens after cranking it over for a few seconds.Loud clanking sound, like something is coming apart. My first thought is that a couple of teeth on the flywheel are chewed off but not the case. I measured the starter per the instructions and it does not appear to need shims.Brand new battery and cables are clean and tight. It's almost sounds like the bendix drive is smacking the flywheel just when it fires up. Later today I'm going to remove the inspection cover and look closely at the flywheel again.

1carguy:
1. I would remove the coil wire
2. crawl under the car remove the inspection cover.
3. have someone crank the engine and look and see how the starter is engaging the flex-plate.
4. then go from there. Good Luck.
