I have a 1964 Impala SS with around 52,000 miles. About the time the speedometer cluster went kaput, I began hearing an intermittent thump/thump sound in the driver side area of the dash when driving. After installing a new cluster and the correct-size speedo cable, I still could hear the sound. I'm told the sound isn't the cable or anything tire-related. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Unscrew the speedo from tranny and go for a test ride.

Did you drop the steering column in order to remove the instrument cluster? There are two clamps that hold the steering column in place from inside the cab. Maybe one of those clamps were not installed correctly.

I have logged many days underneath my dash and behind the instrument cluster. There is nothing back there that really moves except maybe a disconnected wire harness, but you would most likely notice something not working.

Does your car have A/C, if so, maybe a disconnected air duct?

You've given me a couple of somethings to investigate. I appreciate your willingness to help me troubleshoot this sound!

And, yes, the car has factory A/C.

I once found a 5 foot long black snake up under the dash of my '53 Chevy. The car had been stored for years, and one day I pried open the pass door, sat down, and opened the glove compartment to see what it held. A big, fat defroster hose was hanging down into the glove compartment, and when I reached in I brushed my wrist against it. That big, fat defroster hose then muscled up and slithered deeper into the dash and I rocketed out of that car in record time.

Does the thump sound the same as you accelerate or does it increase in frequency? Did you also repalce the whole speedo cable, housing and cable or just the cable?

Starts within a few miles of driving. Any speed. Straight roads, curvy roads, turns. Same continuous thump/thump sound until the car is turned off.

I furnished a new OER speedo cluster and new, SS correct OER speedo cable (no other replacement parts) to my trusted, gray-beard mechanic who is quite familiar with the '64 Impala SS. Mine is a matching numbers 409.

Thanks for your intetest. LOVE that white '61 in your post info!

You say same thumping until the car is turned off, you mean it thumps with the engine running and the car stopped? If yes, it’s most likely the exhaust touching something after it warms up and expands?

Never had a speedo 'thump' (my definition of 'thump') upon failure. They made a much higher pitched (closer to buzzing/rattling and really loud and annoying) noise. Also, if it is 'thumping' at a stand still, can it be the speedo?

Could it be something hitting the firewall?

If you haven't already:

Next time it is 'doing' it at a stand still, look under the hood and under the car for something banging. Rev the engine, see what that does. Can 'hear' where it is coming from?

Just trying to be helpful.

Pete

Brake booster loose on the firewall? Bad mount under the cowl? Time to think outside of the box! There is a plastic duct that goes over the steering column and connects to the left side air conditioning duct. It is a friction fit to the other ducts, and it could be loose. You were not clear if it still makes a sound when the car is parked or not. Is it possible that there is something loose in the steering column, or a bad rag joint? Just throwing out different things that I would be looking at if it were my car.

If you need more help, ship the car to me with the title, and I will find the problem, and road test it for a year or two, and then send it back to you. That's is what friends do for friends..

Love your spirit, Junky, but Roscoe ain't going nowhere! He's not complaining about my thumps, squeeks and groans, so I'm cutting him some slack. Thanks to all who responded to my post. Going off the grid now. Have as good a weekend as possible with everything going on, my friends.
