Working on a dead stock 59.....been parked for almost 40 years...

The 283....and iron glide...are coming out.

I have an 80 carbureted 350 to swap in.....and thinking that the self-regulating alternator....is a no brainer for this project.

Already have a reproduction engine harness.

What is involved in converting from generator/external regulator to...self-regulating alternator?

Any input is appreciated..

I am assuming you have a 3 terminal Delco alternator here. (10s1 or 12s1).The plug on connector has two terminals.
Jumper the No.2 terminal to the battery terminal and connect the No.1 terminal to the wire going to the generator light.(smaller of the two wires going to the armature terminal of the generator)
The battery terminal of course connects to the battery positive post.
That's pretty much it. If your repop engine harness is stock it will need to be modified as the wiring to the regulator will no longer be used.

If you have a new updated alternator wiring harness all these wires should be in place.
If you have a new original style engine wiring harness for a generator there was:

A small dark blue wire from the small field terminal on the generator to the voltage regulator should be deleted.
A small black wire (ground) from the generator case to the voltage regulator mounting screw should be deleted.
A red wire from the voltage regulator to the horn relay should be deleted.
A large black wire (12 gauge) from the large armature terminal on the generator to the voltage regulator can be moved to where the red wire was on the horn relay then to the BAT terminal on the new 10SI alternator.
Another large black wire (12 gauge) from the battery positive post cable to the voltage regulator can be connected to the same terminal on the horn relay or to the BAT terminal on the alternator.
A small brown wire from the dash tell-tale light to the large armature terminal on the generator should be connected to the #1 terminal of the two-wire plug for the new 10SI alternator.
Run a jumper wire (16 gauge or large) from the #2 terminal of the two-wire plug to the BAT terminal of the new 10SI alternator.
A small red wire from the under-dash bus connection to the voltage regulator should be connected to the same terminal on the horn relay or BAT terminal of the new 10SI alternator.

Remove and delete the voltage regulator. Done

DUH.....just realized that the generator wiring...is part of the headlight harness...NOT engine harness..
