I have a 1947 pontiac and it has an open rear unlike the Chevy. It is in fact the same rear that is in the Oldsmobiles. It has large diameter axles and is much stronger than the Chevy. I built a 48 pontiac coupe with this rear and a stout 350 Chevy and automatic trans and never had any problems. Steve

With a T350, was the gear ratio not terrible?

Same rear end 1937 to 1956 Olds/Pont. 10 spline axles, most were a 3.90:1 ratio, some were 3.23:1. They look like a downsized 57-64 Olds/Pont; the obvious difference being the universal that BOLTED to the yoke directly; no U-bolts. Mickey Thompson made aluminum and magnesium third members for both them and the 57-64 9.3" third members. No posi's were ever available; I've seen ONE spool with 10 spline axles. Hard to believe they were one of the rear ends used in the old Junior Fueler cars.

And I goofed, because I was absolutely sure they were enclosed torque tube shafts. My apologizes.
