My neighbor loaned me this car and I'm tryin to figure out what's going on with it. I got it in the summer. Backfires into air cleaner and out of the tail pipe. Does not lug well up grades or basically when under load. If I feather the throttle, find ther sweet spot, it will "catch" with plenty of power. I do notice that it seems to do better in colder weather than in warm or hot weather. Any ideas?

Hmm. Sounds like the timing is off.
How many miles on it?

Just clicked over 94,000. Seems to run pretty good otherwise. But off of stop lights / signs it stumbles around until the accelerator is at the right place...then plenty of power. I have no idea what maintainance was done with this car. There is no distributor on this engine. If you think it's the timeing woulf the crank position sensor be at fault? Check engine light was on, found out the gas cap would not secure on the neck...replaced it with one that would secure...check engine light remained on.

It could be the TPS on the throttle body.
There may be a dead spot.
If it were timing it may not be detected. Likely that has a belt rather than a chain

I initially thought the Throttle Position Sensor. I did have them hook it into a diagnostic tool at Auto Zone...but it never really pin pointed any component that had or was going bad. It seems to be a big guessing game.

If it has the clip on style they were very common.
There is a kit for it.
Comes with a TPS and replacement clips

UPDATE: I took the Aveo to have the oil changed at a local oil change establishment. I normally would have done this operation myself, but the local oil change business was doing it for free on Veteran's Day as part of their thank you to veterans. I watched from inside the car and noticed that they did remove the air cleaner cover, inspect the filter and then replace the cover. I didn't notice it before, but the other day I got to looking at some of the componets associated with the air intake tube and found some rather large tears in that rubber intake duct. I replaced that yesterday. It still has a few small misfire issues, but the driveablity has improved markedly. I just ordered an entire new filter housing as I did notice some duct tape on that as well where the air come in from the wheel house.

I don't know. But, the plugs have 94K on them. They should be fine, but plugs are the heart of a motor...change em for GP.

$20 would be cheap.

The engine has 94,000 on it. I do not know history to know if the plugs were ever changed. I did get another set about a month ago but they're still in the boxes. I was going to change the plug wires at the same time and still need to buy those...thanks.
