I have a 2005 Yukon XL. Bose system. I also have a 2007 GMC Sierra Classic 2500HD/8.1. I use the 8.1 to pull my camp trailer, and would like to cannibalize the Bose system from the Yukon as it has reached the end of it's 275,000 mile road.

The radio in the Sierra is almost dead. You can barely hear it on the back speakers only.
I swapped it over the other day, and it all fit, and plugged in. All good so far.
When I turned the power on, it said that it was locked. I pulled it back out, re-installed it into the Yukon and it worked.

Does anyone know how to turn off the VATS on this truck?

I was told that I had to take it to the dealer with proof of ownership on both vehicles. That's not the problem. The $150 they want to do it is the problem. I can get a new one for that kind of money.

Any help would be appreciated.

Vin has to be programed in the radio by a Tech II. Trip to the dealer unless you know someone with one.

Don't think so, not familiar with that one.

Would swapping the ECM do the trick? Thinking it's the ECM containing the VIN that the radio is looking for a match.

Give this method a try. Its free and from GM. Lets us know if it works. I bought a reset instruction set a while back. If this doesn't work I will see if I still have the instructions.

Here is another option. I believe the cost is $12.99. Worth a try to contact them.

If it is VIN sensitive then the only way I know is to get the radio flashed with a Tech II.

Thanks!
It seems like I had to enter a code to activate this when I bought the Yukon.
I believe there is somehting in the owner's manual on this as well. When I get the vehicle back from my granddaughter, I will try your method.
I appreciate all the feedback. When I make the swap, I will post back here whether I was successful or not.
Again, thanks to all.

Pretty sure that 2005/2007 model is VIN-specific; anybody with a Tech II can help and that does include non-dealership mechanics if you can find one willing to help. Dealership will likely charge you 1 hr minimum labor while an indie would generally be less.

It won't help your research to use the VATS terminology though as that's the acronym for the old "Vehicle Anti-Theft System" that preceded these models of trucks - think of the "pill" key design you saw on the older Camaros, Corvettes, etc. with the resistor implanted visibly in the blade of the key. That's VATS.

Someotherguy,
Again you are spot on. I realized that using the term VATS would be confusing, but the dealer here told me that I had to disable the VATS to use the radio in another vehicle.

The reply from george88gta looks promising. I will try that when I get the truck back out from under my granddaughter. Probably on the first of February. The sticker/plates are due, and I am not going to pay for another year.
