Purchased a aftermarket 3 piece Rear Bumper (Probably my first mistake) and aftermarket Bumper brackets. Can not get the center bumper to fit over the Bumper Brackets. Inside dimensions of Center piece is 46.5 inches and the outside dimensions of the two center bracket is 46.75. The center brackets are made of slightly thicker metal than the ones that were on the car. The old brackets are in rough shape and one is bent. Before I go and modified the new Brackets I thought I might ask for advice and ask if anyone has had similar problems. Thanks

I wish I could get a repop body part within 1/8" of fitting. You could order another bumper and set of brackets and they will be off in the other direction.

I will cut 1/8 inch out of the center body of the brackets and weld them back together. Taking 1/8 inch off the brackets ends would remove the metal tabs that hold the center bumper piece on. I figure I can always shim the brackets out to fit the inside dimensions of the center bumper piece if I have too. I realized 1/4 of an inch might not seem like a lot in the aftermarket world when dealing with body parts but in this case it was a show stopper. Just wonder what the original outside dimensions of the brackets should be or is it the bumper center piece inside dimensions that are incorrect.

You stated the problem as its an aftrmarket bumper. They are inferior in fit and finish. Rechroming OEM bumpers is the way to go.

Agree 100%, Have decided to have my old one Re chromed. Very unhappy with the with the way the three pieces fit together and the chrome finish is very easy to scratch. Planning on at trip to Tenn. to Tri City. I should have know better, the one I bought was $100 cheaper than another major parts supplier of Tri Five parts. The old saying You get what You Pay for seems true in this case.

Surely the frame rails are not bent, you mentioned one bracket was bent?
Now way to bend the bumper mounting ears out?
Or just a no way this will work?

Thanks for the pictures, I now believe after seeing your measurement (46.5) which is the same as my new center piece that the problem is/was with the new brackets. Frame looks straight with no damage of any kind. Wish I could find outside dimension of frame rails. I did try bending brackets tab in and bumper center piece tabs out but could not get bumper to seat on brackets. Cut 1/4 inch out of the center body of the passenger side bumper bracket and rewelded back together. This solved most of my problems with center piece fitting over brackets and with both end pieces of bumper fitting better on both sides of Body. I will be replacing this bumper with my old one after getting it rechromed.

Measured frame rails. They are 41 and 1/8 inches wide which is perfect. Looks like my new Brackets are the problem. My Thanks to all for responding.

Tell Tri City that you want your original bumpers back, and they will mark them on the inside of the bumper. Many times bumper shops will just exchange the bumpers if they have units ready to ship. I don't know if this is the case with Tri City, but it is better to know in advance, than find that the part you get back doesn't fit as well as your original. I have had them do a few bumpers for me, and have been very happy with their work. I always get my originals back marked on the rear.

Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
