When I yank on the transfer case lever, the light indicator lights up in a few seconds and I have 4WD. I just did that, light went on, then it went off in half a mile. No 4WD.
What does the sequence consist of when I put it in 4WD? I know there is a nitrogen cartridge I believe, on the front axle.
Before I get to looking, tell me where to look and save me some precious time, please.

The thermal actuator on the front diff is the first suspicion.
Especially since you said it failed after engaging.
If it has not been replaced it should be upgraded with the electronic version

Never been replaced.
Hmmm...electronic version? With all the gravel roads I am on, I'd need some convincing.
Never knew there was an electronic version.

I switched mine to the manual cable version, and it works very well.

The electric one is great. No issues there.
There is a cable option, alot more work to do though for more work to use.
If you upgrade to the electric you will likely forget about any issues.
And it does not have the delay of the thermal ones.
Gravel roads wont matter. They cannot be any worse that NY roads

The only benefit I really see is the ability to have 2lo if you did a manual setup.
Can be done with the actuator as well though with not too much work

I did the 4x4 posi-lok and hid the red button in the ash tray. I put one in my brother's 95 and it's easier to tuck under the dash out of sight with the new interior.

The 2 low is nice. The biggest thing is the thermal actuator takes a long time to heat up when it's cold and it WILL fail. It's just a matter of time. It usually decides to fail when you need it most.
The electric ones seem to be more dependable, but I like having 2 low when I'm backing a trailer in a tight spot with my manual transmission.

Its the wifes rig so I'm not worried about 2 low. Sure enough be easy to do though, just put a switch on the power feed.
