I didn't want to hijack the carpet thread so I will start another.

I am making plans to re-upholster my 51 coupe and would like some advice about the floor covering.
I would kinda like to use an original type rubber mat in the front but I am concerned about the noise. Does anyone know if the carpet would be any quieter than the mat?

I am installing extra insulation everywhere that I can to try to reduce the noise so I don't want to do something to counteract that.

Thanks, Pete

    In response to Airlifter

Originally, all '51 Chevrolets [DeLuxe and Special] came with a rubber mat in the front regardless of trim level although the design differed slightly as he DeLuxe models had a simulated carpet insert [also rubber] on the floor board directly in front of the seat [the only exception to this was the Belair. Sometime in 1950 the front floor covering changed from the rubber mat to black carpeting in the Belair models]. The mats all had a jute backing on them while the toe board had about a 1/2" sound board laid onto it. The carpet in the rear which was very thin carpeting with rubber backing also had a jute mat between the carpet and the steel floor. I'd figure that anything thicker than what was laid down originally would afford at least a little better sound deadening.
